Genetic Disease:
Do Belgian Malinois get inherited cataracts? Do Dogue de Bordeaux get
juvenile progressive renal disease? Why does the information in your textbook
never match what your breeder client has to say? The reality is that the list
of genetic diseases in dogs is growing, and changing, much more rapidly than
textbooks can possibly reflect. In addition, textbooks are based upon
published accounts of disease which are just the tip of the iceberg.
They often reflect the interest of the author or diseases for which
investigational funding is available, rather than those diseases that are
truly prevalent or important. In addition, you have no way of knowing
whether the published disease existed only in California, or whether it even
still exists . . . anywhere!
I have selected some useful web sites that may get you started in your search
for reliable information about this rapidly changing body of information. If
none of these help, then you should access web sites maintained by Canadian or
American purebred dog clubs. Most of the breed clubs publish at least some
information about genetic diseases in that breed, some more reliable than
others.
